New Year - time for change
Today there is a very special blog article. The first 3 weeks of the new year are already behind us and the dear Anneleen would like to share her thoughts with us. On this page she publishes – together with us – her first guest blog article. Thank you for your great words, Anneleen. I hope you enjoy reading them. To you and to everyone who is currently overcoming an illness.
A new year begins and gives us the opportunity to change things and work on ourselves.
Since I was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2014, I have been very much concerned with the topic of change. This stroke of fate was probably my personal wake-up call and the chance to embark on a new path.
I started with small changes:
Less meat and sugar, more exercise in the fresh air, psycho-oncological counseling… In the beginning, I often let myself become unsettled and interpreted setbacks as defeats and proof that I was not on the right path after all.
It wasn’t until 2018, when I was advised to have a very radical surgery because of metastases in various places, that I began to believe more and more in my own strengths. I dealt intensively with the topics of self-healing and self-love. I took online courses, read books and began to meditate. The longer I did this, the more right it felt. The fear of cancer disappeared and the surgery could be done much more gently.
Along the way, I also met Lisa in October 2019.
A seemingly chance encounter, but certainly a special twist of fate. Since then, I have enjoyed my appointments with her, which always take me a little further along my path.
I have not yet overcome my cancer, but I have become a different person and deeply grateful for it.

I have arrived at my place and it feels good.
For me, every change is enriching. Rather rarely do I have the feeling that the completed change was not so helpful after all. But even then I am glad about this insight, which I would not have gained otherwise. And the more I change, the more I feel how many things I actually have an influence on. That gives me strength and energy.
Therefore, I would like to encourage you to use the beginning of the year to change things.
Think very specifically about what you want to change and can change and in what way it should be done. Write it down and post a note or picture as a reminder. Start with small, manageable steps. Many small changes add up to big changes. It’s best to develop daily routines and rituals. For example, I think about what I’m grateful for right after I wake up and do a small first workout in bed right after. That way, I start the day with a different, more positive focus.
Find things that do you good and make you feel that they are right for you, and don’t feel bad if you don’t get everything done that you set out to do. The main thing is to stay on the ball! Then you will surely be rewarded soon.
